Cognitive Modeling of Situation Awareness
Situation Awareness (SA) is widely recognized as the foundation for decision-making and action. Despite the acknowledged impact of SA on performance, computational models of SA have been problematic to develop, in part due to the complex and imprecise way SA is developed in human cognition. Using our goal-directed task analysis (GDTA) as the foundation, SA Technologies has developed cognitive models that employ Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping (FCM) techniques, which combine fuzzy logic and concept mapping. This methodology allows our modelers to represent the complex and partial (i.e., fuzzy) relationships between the inputs and outputs of the human cognitive system. A major advantage of FCMs is their ability to model relationships that are fundamentally “messy” in nature due to their qualitative, subjective, and inexact characteristics. Thus, FCMs are an ideal cognitive modeling technique for representing phenomena that are hard to quantify, such as SA.
